More than 1,000 athletes were off to the races Monday as they began competing in the 2013 Summer Games, put on by the Special Olympics of the District of Columbia.

The Catholic University of America will confer approximately 1,500 degrees during its 124th Annual Commencement Ceremony to be held outdoors at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, on the east steps of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, located at 400 Michigan Ave., N.E. In addition, approximately 250 degrees will be distributed to students graduating from CUA’s Columbus School of Law at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 24, in the Basilica.

In March, they came together to help elect a new pope. In May, several American cardinals came together to help support scholarships for students attending The Catholic University of America. Four U.S. cardinal electors from the recent conclave, and one retired cardinal, were among the 650 guests at the 24th American Cardinals Dinner on May 10, in Washington, D.C., which raised nearly $1.7 million for CUA scholarships, the second highest total in the dinner's history.

The Catholic University of America School of Nursing has received the first installment of a $4 million grant from Bedford Falls Foundation Charitable Trust, a foundation established by William E. Conway Jr., co-chief executive officer and managing director of The Carlyle Group, and his wife, Joanne, to fund full four-year scholarships for promising students who will be encouraged to fill nursing jobs in the Washington, D.C., area after graduation.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center will present its Medal of Valor to Murry Sidlin, professor of conducting and Holocaust music studies at Catholic University’s Benjamin T. Rome School of Music. The medal will be presented at the center’s National Tribute Dinner on June 12 in Beverly Hills, Calif.

In the fall of his junior year, Brendan Duffy studied abroad at the University of Oxford’s New College and what started as just a semester of study turned into a full year when he was selected for the university’s varsity basketball team.

In June 2005, after his graduation from St. Peter’s Preparatory School (Prep) in Jersey City, N.J., Salvatore Veniero, B.A. 2009, lived with a family in the rural Eifel hills of western Germany. Earlier that spring, the Venieros had hosted a student from the same German family through Prep’s German exchange program.
